What are dummy files (fake test files) and why use them?
Dummy files are placeholder files with synthetic content, made for testing uploads, size limits and parsers. Instead of hunting for random sample files or writing dd and fsutil commands, a dummy file generator lets you create a file of the right type and the exact size in seconds. That makes it easy to test how your software behaves with small, large and borderline files, without using real data.
Dummy Files is a free online dummy file generator and fake file generator that works entirely in your browser. There is nothing to install, no signup, and nothing is uploaded, so you can download dummy files as often as you need.
Dummy files vs sample files. Static sample files usually come in a handful of fixed sizes, so you take what is on the shelf. A generated dummy file can be any size you type, exact to the byte, which is what you need to test a limit such as 5 MB and the file one byte above it. Common test files include documents such as a dummy Word file, images such as a dummy PNG file or a dummy JPG file, data such as a dummy JSON file, and archives such as a dummy ZIP file or a dummy RAR file.
When a real file is better. Dummy files are filler, built to test size, type and plumbing. If you are testing OCR, text extraction, rendering fidelity or how a parser performs on realistic layouts, use a real document that you have permission to use.
What developers and QA teams use dummy files for
Upload size limits
Check that your app, reverse proxy or storage bucket accepts files up to the limit and rejects larger ones with a proper error.
Parser and viewer testing
Run valid PDFs, spreadsheets, images and archives through your importers, previewers and virus scanners.
Bandwidth and performance tests
Use files of known size to measure upload and download speed, timeouts and memory use.
Safe demo and bug-report data
Share synthetic files in demos and bug reports instead of real customer documents.

Dummy files FAQ
What are dummy files?
Dummy files are placeholder files with synthetic content, made for testing. Developers and QA teams use them to check file uploads, size limits, parsers, storage and transfer pipelines without touching real or confidential documents.
Are dummy files the same as fake files?
Yes. Fake files, test files, sample files and placeholder files are other names for the same thing: a file of a real type, such as a PDF, ZIP or CSV, that holds made-up content. This site works as a fake file generator too: pick a format and a size, and the file is built in your browser.
How do I create a dummy file of a certain size?
Use the generator above: pick a format, enter the size and click generate. From a command line you can also make a blank 10 MB file: fsutil file createnew dummy.bin 10485760 on Windows (may need administrator rights), mkfile -n 10m dummy.bin on macOS, or truncate -s 10M dummy.bin on Linux. Blank files have no real format structure.
Are my dummy files uploaded to a server?
No. Files are created entirely in your browser. Nothing you generate, and no filename or setting you choose, is uploaded or stored on our servers.
What is the largest dummy file I can generate?
Limits depend on the format. Archive and binary formats such as ZIP and BIN go up to 1 GB, PDF up to 100 MB, and many text, data, code and document formats up to 50 MB. The limit for the selected format is shown in the tool. The largest sizes need free memory in your browser.
Which file formats can I generate?
62 formats across 7 categories: Data & Text (10), Documents (6), Images (12), Archives (6), Developer & Code (16), Binary & System (7), Web & API (5). That includes PDF, DOCX, XLSX, CSV, JSON, PNG, JPG, ZIP and more.
Are the generated files valid?
Yes for the formats we check. An automated script generates PDF, CSV, JSON, XML, TXT, SVG, PNG, JPG, WEBP, DOCX, XLSX, PPTX, ODT, ZIP, RAR, 7z, TAR, GZ and TAR.GZ files at several sizes and tests them with independent tools (for example pdf-lib, JSZip, unzip, 7-Zip, UnRAR, GNU tar and bsdtar, and a real browser for images). Extra size is added as padding to reach the exact byte count you choose. Formats we have not checked yet, such as GIF, TIFF, AVIF, HEIC, SQLite, WASM and most source-code and config formats, may not be valid files and are only good for testing size and type handling. The how it works page lists what was checked and when.
What is the difference between KB and KiB?
By strict definition, 1 KB is 1,000 bytes and 1 KiB is 1,024 bytes. This generator uses binary units: 1 KB is 1,024 bytes, 1 MB is 1,048,576 bytes and 1 GB is 1,073,741,824 bytes. If a limit is quoted in decimal MB, enter the size in bytes.
How can I use dummy files to test upload limits?
Generate three files for your limit: one just below it, one exactly at it and one just above it. The first two should upload, and the third should be rejected with a clear error instead of a crash or timeout.
Are dummy files safe?
Yes for normal testing. The files hold synthetic filler, no personal data, and are built in your browser. The generated PDF, CSV, Office and archive files contain no macros or scripts. As with any download, only open an executable-type file in a test environment, and expect some scanners to flag unusual files.
Is it free, and can I use the files in commercial projects?
It is free with no signup. The files are synthetic and contain no third-party content, so you can use them in test suites, CI pipelines, staging environments and demos.
