Privacy Policy

The short version: your files are made in your browser and never uploaded. In the EEA, UK and Switzerland analytics cookies are off unless you accept them; visits are always counted anonymously. Ads are never personalised.

Who we are

Dummy Files (dummyfiles.com) is a free dummy file generator. Dummy Files is responsible for the data described here. Contact: contact@dummyfiles.com.

Your files never leave your browser

Every file is generated on your device with your browser. The file, its contents and the file name you type are never sent to us or to anyone else.

So that the download page can show a preview, your browser keeps the most recent file in its own storage (IndexedDB) and remembers which page you came from (session storage). This data stays on your device. The stored file is replaced when you generate a new one, and you can delete it at any time by clearing this site's data in your browser.

Analytics and cookies

We measure how the site is used, for example which formats and sizes are popular and which pages people start from, with two tools: Google Analytics 4 and Nikshub Analytics, our own self-hosted service (analytics.nikshub.com, running on Cloudflare). What happens depends on where you are and what you choose.

In the EEA, the UK and Switzerland

You see a cookie banner, and no analytics cookies are set unless you click Accept.

  • Before you choose, or if you reject: nothing is stored on your device for analytics. Google Analytics receives cookieless pings (that a page was viewed, plus basic browser and device information) without an identifier that recognises you. Nikshub Analytics counts the visit without cookies: our server combines your IP address and browser user agent with a random value that changes every day and turns them into a one-way code. The IP address is not stored, the daily value is deleted after the day ends, and the code cannot be linked to you, to other days or to other websites. We do this on the basis of our legitimate interest in knowing how many people use the site and which pages work (Article 6(1)(f) GDPR); the data is used only for our own aggregated statistics and deleted after 36 months.
  • If you accept: analytics cookies are set, as described below.

Everywhere else

There is no banner and analytics cookies are on by default. You can opt out at any time with Cookie settings at the bottom of every page and choose Reject; from then on the site works as for a visitor who rejected cookies in the EEA.

The cookies and what is measured

  • Google Analytics: first-party cookies _ga and _ga_* (up to 2 years) tell new and returning visits apart. Events we send: the file format, the requested size, the number of pages, rows or columns, the page path and short error messages. We never send the file name you type or any file content. Google signals and ad personalisation are turned off. Google processes this data as our processor and may transfer it outside the EEA under the EU-US Data Privacy Framework and standard contractual clauses. Google Analytics 4 does not store IP addresses. Event data is kept for the retention period set in our Google Analytics account (at most 14 months).
  • Nikshub Analytics: first-party cookies ml_vid (a random visitor id, 1 year) and ml_sid (a random session id, 30 minutes). It records page views, time on page, the referring page, clicks on links to other sites and, on pages with ads, how many ads were shown, seen and clicked and whether an ad blocker was active; with cookies it also records your screen width. Your country and city are derived from your IP address, which is not stored. Email addresses, tokens and similar values are removed from page addresses before sending. The data is stored in our own Cloudflare account, used only for statistics about this site and deleted automatically after 36 months.

Your choices

  • Cookie settings at the bottom of every page changes your choice at any time. Rejecting also removes the Google Analytics and Nikshub Analytics cookies from your browser.
  • If your browser sends a Global Privacy Control signal, Nikshub Analytics does not count your visit unless you accept cookies, and analytics cookies are never switched on automatically.
  • You can object to the cookieless counting at any time by writing to contact@dummyfiles.com, or block it with any content blocker.

Advertising (Google AdSense)

Pages on this site may show ads served by Google AdSense (Google Ireland Limited in the EEA, UK and Switzerland; Google LLC elsewhere). The cookie banner only asks about analytics. Advertising consent is always set to denied through Google Consent Mode, whatever you choose, so:

  • Ads are never personalised: they are not based on your interests, browsing history or profile.
  • Google does not read or set advertising cookies or similar identifiers on this site for those ads.
  • To deliver an ad, count it and prevent fraud, your browser connects to Google, and Google receives technical data such as your IP address, browser and device type, and the page you are on. Ads may be chosen from that page's content and your approximate location.

Google processes this data under its own responsibility. See how Google uses information from sites that use its services and how Google uses cookies in advertising. You can also manage ads across the web at Google My Ad Center. We do not sell or share your personal data for cross-context behavioural advertising.

Other storage on your device

  • df_consent in local storage remembers your cookie choice, so the banner does not reappear.
  • df_region in session storage remembers, for this browser session, whether the cookie banner applies where you are (only "yes" or "no"; your country is not stored).
  • df_source in session storage remembers the page you generated from, for the Back link.
  • The latest generated file in IndexedDB, as described above.

These are needed for the site to work and are never sent to us.

Hosting

The site runs on Cloudflare Workers. To deliver and protect the site, Cloudflare processes technical data such as your IP address and the requested URL, for example in security logs. This is based on our legitimate interest in running a secure website.

Feedback and email

When you send the feedback form ("Request feature"), we store what you choose and write: the topic, your message, your email address if you add one, and the page and file format you were on. This is saved in a Cloudflare D1 database and sent to our inbox via Cloudflare Email Routing. We use it only to improve the site and, if you gave an email, to reply. We delete feedback after 12 months.

To stop spam, we also keep a one-way hash of your IP address, made with a secret key, so the raw IP is never stored. It is used only to limit how many messages one visitor can send and is deleted after 24 hours.

If you email us directly, we use your address and message only to reply, and delete them when they are no longer needed.

Your rights

Depending on where you live (for example under the GDPR in the EU and UK, or the CCPA in California), you can ask for access to, correction or deletion of your personal data, restrict or object to its use, and withdraw consent at any time without affecting earlier processing. You can also complain to your data protection authority. We do not sell personal data or share it for behavioural advertising. Write to contact@dummyfiles.com and we will reply within 30 days.

Changes

If this policy changes, we update the date at the top of this page. Questions are welcome at contact@dummyfiles.com or on the contact page.
