Dummy Word File Generator (DOCX)
Every dummy Word file is a .docx package with a short document and a filler part, exact to the byte you set.
Sample DOCX files, ready to download:
One click, exact size (1 KB = 1,024 bytes), default options, built in your browser.
A dummy Word file is a dummy document in .docx format made for testing, in the same ZIP-of-XML container Microsoft Word saves. Download one free at the exact size you need, from 4 KB to 50 MB. Inside is a two-line document plus a stored filler part that brings it to the byte. It is made for upload, validation and storage tests, not for checking how Word lays out a page. If you need many pages of real text, use a dummy PDF file instead.
How we check it: every generated file must be exactly the size you set and pass our own ZIP and CRC-32 checker, JSZip, Info-ZIP unzip -t and 7-Zip, plus the required OpenXML parts; the last run on 21 October 2026 passed 155 of 155 runs across 17 formats (how the files are made and checked).
What is inside a dummy Word file
Open a copy with any ZIP tool and you will find these parts (how we build and check these files):
- [Content_Types].xml, _rels/.rels and word/document.xml: the three parts every .docx needs.
- A document with two paragraphs: "Dummy Word Document" followed by the file name, and a line saying the file was generated by DummyFiles.com.
- A padding.dat part, stored without compression, that carries the extra size. It is declared in [Content_Types].xml, so the package stays consistent at every size.
- No macros, styles, images or embedded objects. It is a .docx, not a macro-enabled .docm.
What a dummy Word file is used for
Document upload forms
Job applications, claims and onboarding forms take Word files. Test their size limit and their type check with a .docx you can share.
Type and signature checks
Make sure your handler accepts a real .docx and rejects a text file renamed to .docx.
Email attachments
Send Word files of a known size through mail servers and ticket systems to see where they bounce.
Document storage
Load document management systems and file shares with .docx files of predictable sizes.
How to validate a DOCX upload
A .docx is a ZIP archive, so it starts with the bytes PK (50 4B 03 04), exactly like a dummy ZIP file. A signature check alone cannot tell them apart. To be sure it is a Word document, open the archive and look for [Content_Types].xml and word/document.xml.
The official MIME type is application/vnd.openxmlformats-officedocument.wordprocessingml.document. Browsers do not always send it, and application/octet-stream is common, so treat the MIME type as a hint rather than proof.
Testing a document upload limit
Make three files around the limit with the unit set to Bytes: one byte under, exactly at it and one byte over. The padding part is stored, not compressed, so the file on disk is the size you asked for and zipping it again saves almost nothing. Repeat the test with a dummy Excel file if the same form takes spreadsheets.
| Limit | Size | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| nginx client_max_body_size (default) | 1 MB 1,048,576 B | Requests with a larger body get HTTP 413. |
| PHP upload_max_filesize (default) | 2 MB 2,097,152 B | Also capped by post_max_size, so raise both. |
| AWS Lambda synchronous invocation payload | 6 MB 6,291,456 B | Applies to request and response. |
| Amazon API Gateway REST API payload | 10 MB 10,485,760 B | Hard quota for REST APIs. |
| Outlook default attachment limit (Exchange accounts) | 10 MB 10,485,760 B | Administrators can change it. |
| Outlook attachment limit (internet accounts) | 20 MB 20,971,520 B | Per Microsoft Outlook guidance. |
| Gmail message size limit | 25 MB 26,214,400 B | Attachments grow about a third when encoded, so a 20 MB file can already be too big. |

Dummy Word file FAQ
Will the dummy Word file open in Microsoft Word?
It is built to: it has every part a .docx needs and passes our ZIP and package checks. We have not opened every size in Microsoft Word, so try it in your version before you rely on it. It is meant for upload and size tests, where the container matters more than the content.
Is a DOCX file a ZIP file?
Yes. A .docx is a ZIP archive of XML files. Rename a copy to .zip and any ZIP tool shows word/document.xml and the other parts inside.
What is the MIME type of a DOCX file?
application/vnd.openxmlformats-officedocument.wordprocessingml.document. Browsers sometimes send application/octet-stream instead, so check the file content too.
How is the exact file size reached?
A stored filler part, padding.dat, takes up the extra bytes. It is declared in the package, so the .docx stays consistent at every size.
Does the file contain macros?
No. It is a plain .docx with no macros, images or embedded objects.
How large can a dummy Word file be?
From 4 KB up to 50 MB. Everything is built in your browser and never uploaded.
