A dummy SVG file is a small, well-formed SVG drawing made for testing, rendered at the width and height you choose. Download one free at the exact size you need, from 1.5 KB to 25 MB; a comment pads it to the byte. SVG is text (XML), not pixels, which makes it a different test from a dummy PNG file: upload filters, sanitizers and image pipelines often handle it as a special case, and that is where the bugs live.

How we check it: every generated file must be exactly the size you set and pass a well-formedness checker (svg root and namespace), plus a decode in headless Microsoft Edge; the last run on 21 October 2026 passed 155 of 155 runs across 17 formats (how the files are made and checked).

What is inside a dummy SVG file

It is plain SVG markup you can open in a text editor (how we build and check these files):

  • An XML declaration and an <svg> root with the SVG namespace, width and height set to your dimensions and a matching viewBox, such as viewBox="0 0 800 500".
  • The same picture as the other dummy images, drawn with shapes and text: a dark gradient card, a grid pattern, a glow and a badge with the file name and dimensions.
  • No scripts, no event handlers, no links and no external images or fonts. The text asks for Inter and falls back to any sans-serif font.
  • The extra size is a comment (<!-- DUMMY_PADDING ... -->) just before the closing </svg> tag. The drawing scales instead of adding pixels, so the smallest file is 1.5 KB at any dimensions.

What a dummy SVG file is used for

SVG upload policies

Find out whether your app accepts SVG at all. Many block it on purpose, and a clean file shows whether the block is deliberate.

Sanitizers

Run the file through your SVG sanitizer and compare: a clean file should come out with its drawing intact.

Rendering and conversion

Check that SVG previews, rasterizers and PDF exports keep the right width, height and aspect ratio.

Icon and logo limits

Test the small size limits that icon and logo fields usually have, down to the byte.

Testing SVG uploads safely

SVG can carry scripts, which is why so many apps block it. This file carries none, so it is the clean baseline. A strict filter may still reject it, which is a policy choice. A sanitizer should let it through with the drawing unchanged; some sanitizers also strip comments, so the stored file may be smaller than the upload.

For the opposite test, a file that must be blocked, write your own SVG with a script element and use it only in a test environment. This site does not generate one.

SVG size limits

Icons and logos are usually a few kilobytes, so SVG fields tend to have small limits. Set the unit to Bytes and make three files around yours: one byte under, at and over. The drawing is identical in all three; only the padding comment grows.

Common upload and attachment limits and their sizes in bytes
Limit Size Notes
nginx client_max_body_size (default) 1 MB 1,048,576 B Requests with a larger body get HTTP 413.
PHP upload_max_filesize (default) 2 MB 2,097,152 B Also capped by post_max_size, so raise both.
AWS Lambda synchronous invocation payload 6 MB 6,291,456 B Applies to request and response.
Amazon API Gateway REST API payload 10 MB 10,485,760 B Hard quota for REST APIs.
Outlook default attachment limit (Exchange accounts) 10 MB 10,485,760 B Administrators can change it.
Outlook attachment limit (internet accounts) 20 MB 20,971,520 B Per Microsoft Outlook guidance.
Gmail message size limit 25 MB 26,214,400 B Attachments grow about a third when encoded, so a 20 MB file can already be too big.

Dummy SVG file FAQ

Is the dummy SVG valid?

Yes. It is well-formed XML with an svg root, the SVG namespace and a viewBox, and browsers render it. We check it with an XML parser and render it in Microsoft Edge.

Does the SVG contain scripts or links?

No. There are no script elements, no event handlers, no links and no external resources.

Can I set the width and height?

Yes. Open Options and set them from 1 to 8,192; the default is 800 x 500. The width, height and viewBox of the root element follow your choice.

Why is the minimum size the same for every dimension?

Because SVG describes shapes, not pixels. A bigger image changes a few numbers in the markup, not the amount of data, so the smallest file is 1.5 KB whatever the dimensions.

How large can a dummy SVG file be?

Up to 25 MB. Beyond the drawing, the size is a single padding comment.

Is anything uploaded?

No. The SVG is written in your browser and never sent to a server.
